7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you’re like a lot of people, your gutters are not something you really think about. They need regular gutter cleaning, but besides that, their functionality is very simple.

It’s not until rain gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you understand how important they are!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most homes in Mentor. They blend into the home’s exterior unless the homeowner decided on copper or wood … materials that are definitely meant to stand out! Most home exteriors are made of durable but lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The purpose of gutters is to provide a path of minimal resistance for rain to get off your roof as fast as possible. When they are in good condition, your rain gutters will lead runoff away from the foundation and landscaping, will protect your home’s exterior from mildew and mold, the concrete and pavement and basement from leaking water, and the rain gutters themselves from rust.

When gutters are damaged, it can lead to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your home and surrounding property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too simple to fix to be the reason for major home repairs! Keeping an eye on your gutters is easy and safe. If you notice any of the following issues, it’s a good clue that your rain gutters have some type of damage.

As soon as you find a possible gutter problem, you can decide if it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying on your own or if it’s something you should call a gutter company for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Pooling water near your home is a good sign that your gutters or downspouts are not routing the water runoff away from your house the way they are supposed to. Pooling water can result in mold, weakening of your foundation, and creates the perfect habitat for pesky mosquitoes. And, it will leave the areas around your home constantly soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Either one of these is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the gutters or the sides of your house. Mold and mildew indicate that there is excessive moisture in that area – a potential issue with the rain gutters could be the cause. Remember that mildew and mold are likely to grow on the north side of a home anyway, so if that’s where they’re appearing, it might be because that area doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight on it. This is a scenario where the advice and knowledge of a gutter specialist in Mentor would be helpful.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You will have to wait until it’s actually raining to discover this type of gutter problem. Hopefully this doesn’t mean your gutters are damaged. It might just be that the gutter is clogged with debris and should be cleaned out. In either case, you want to have it looked at right away.

Basement Leaks

Based on the design of your home’s basement, the leaking could be caused by any number of things. The standing water problem we discussed earlier could definitely result in a basement leak. Egress windows and even cinder block walls will only block out so much water. That’s why it is so important to keep your gutters in working order!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Gutters empty directly onto the ground most of the time, and landscaping should be designed to work with this water flow to help it submerge into the ground. However, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will allow rainfall to overflow or pool in areas where it isn’t supposed to. This water can destroy plants either by force or by overwatering. It might also displace flower bed materials like rock or mulch.

Water Marks

Water marks are a visible sign that there is excessive moisture on a surface. Water marks are left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated into the ground. You will usually see water marks under the gutters or behind the downspouts. This is a typically an indication that water is pouring down the outside of the gutters rather than staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is the simplest to find. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked in the middle, they have damage. After a storm, it’s a good idea to walk around your house to identify any damage to the roof, exterior, and gutters. These inspections are in addition to your routine home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are some easy tips Mentor Gutters & More! recommends to help prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters out at least one time each year. You can lengthen the time between gutter repairs by having them cleaned out. Like with anything else, the better you maintain your gutters, the fewer issues you’ll experience with them.

The recommended time to clean gutters is in the spring, but to be extra cautious, give them a cleaning in the fall, too. Most homeowners clean their gutters on their own, but there are professional gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to deal with the mess or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of damage can be visible from the outside of the gutters. A quick inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – will reveal any of the signs we discussed above.

We’d recommend that you complete an exterior home inspection following each season to ensure that your gutters are working properly.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Fixing a problem before it becomes too bad can save you time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can easily be replaced very affordably and quickly.

However, if you let the issue go on too long, you could end up making repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire area of landscaping.
